  Rickets  
  Rickets is a deficiency of Vitamin D also known by different names like Osteomalacia, Renal Osteodystrophy  
  Paediatric Osteomalacia.  
  This disease causes softening and weakening of bones in children due to deficiency of Vitamin D. This softening  
   occurs from a loss of the mineral calcium from the skeleton Rickets is most likely to occur during periods of  
  rapid growth, when the body demands high levels of calcium and phosphate.  
     
  Symptoms:  
  Pain in the bones of Arms, Legs, Spine, Pelvis.  
  Skeletal deformities including Bow legs, Forward projection of the breastbone (pigeon chest ) , Funnel chest ,  
  Beading in the rib cage (rachitic rosary) and Asymmetrical or odd-shaped skull. Spine deformities ,Pelvic deformities.  
  increased tendency toward bone fractures.  
  Increased incidence of dental caries in the teeth , dental deformities, delayed formation of teeth  
  Decreased muscle tone , muscle cramps.  
  Impaired growth, short stature  
  Abdomen pot belly due to weakness of abdominal muscle.  
     
  Diagnosis:  
  Physical examination reveal tenderness over bone, deformities of leg ,chest or beading of ribs can be noticed.  
  Increased alkaline phosphatase  
  Calcium level may low  
  Serum phosphorus may be low  
   Bone X-ray may show decalcification or changes in the shape or structure of the bones.  
     
  Prevention:  
  Rickets may be avoided by giving child an adequate intake of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D.  
  Levels of calcium and phosphorus should be monitored regularly in people who have renal disorders.  
     
  Homoeopathic Treatment:  
  CALC-PHOS: it is especially adopted in cases of rickets in anaemic children who are peevish, flabby  
  have cold extremities and feeble digestion. There is difficulty in union of fracture bones.  
  Stiffness and pain in bones with cold &numbness feeling.  
     
  IODUM:  is given in rickets to those children who are exceedingly thin, dark complexioned, with enlarged  
  lymphatic glands, has voracious appetite but gets thin. Pain in bones at night. constrictive sensations.  
     
  PHOSPORUS: Burning of feet. Weakness and trembling, from every exertion. Can scarcely hold anything  
  with his hands. Arms and hands become numb. great bone fragility. stitching pain in bones.  
     
  PHOS-ACID: Great debility is marked. Pains at night, as if bones were scraped. Tearing pains in joints  
  , bones, and periosteum. Cramps in upper arms and wrists. Stumbles easily and makes missteps.  
     
  SILICEA: rachitic children, with large head open fontanelle and sutures, distended abdomen, slow in walking  
  Cramp in calves and soles. Loss of power in legs Icy cold and sweaty feet.
